OTG features and Troubleshooting steps

USB On-The-Go, often abbreviated to USB OTG or just OTG, is a specification that allows USB devices, such as tablets or smartphones, to act as a host, allowing other USB devices, such as USB flash drives, digital cameras, mice or keyboards, to be attached to them.

OTG Connection Issues:

  • Check if the customer is able to see the contents of the USB flash drive after it is connected via an OTG cable
  • The customer can use the Explorer app on MIUI or any file manager app to check if the USB flash drive is detected and if the contents are visible.
  • If the USB flash drive is not detected or if the contents are not seen, ask the customer to connect a USB HID device to check if it works.
  • If the HID device also does not work, follow the steps below:

Enabling USB Debugging:

  • Ask the customer to go to - Settings>>About phone>>MIUI version>>Tap 7 times>> it will turn on the developer option in settings
  • Again ask the customer to go to - Settings>>Additional Settings>>Developer Option>>USB debugging>>Turn on
  • Ask the customer to connect the device via OTG again and check if the issue is resolved.

If the above steps do not resolve the issues, please follow the issues below:

USB Flash Drive Format:

  • Ask the customer to go to - Settings>>Additional settings>>Developer option>> Under Networking Select USB configuration>>MTP
  • Ask the customer to format the external device (Pen Drive or SD card) to FAT32-format (i.e. customer has to connect the external device with PC or laptop and change the format – Select the device icon >> Right click the icon >> Select ‘Format’ option)

If it is still not resolved, we can conclude that the OTG cable is faulty.
